A one-of-a-kind transparent 1939 Pontiac 'Deluxe 6' known as the 'Ghost Car' sold at auction in Michigan for $308,000 over the weekend (July 30th). The Pontiac has a body made entirely of plexiglass, which is rare for any object made at that time. It was a collaboration between General Motors and Rohn & Haas chemical company, who manufactured the plexiglass. Pre-sale estimates had been as high as $500,000 but the final hammer down at $308,000 is still pretty amazing.

 

The 'Ghost Car' only has about 100 miles on it, all of them from driving the car in and out of dealerships for display. It was first seen at the 1939 World's Fair in New York. And that mileage is low for a reason. The car was not actually manufactured to be driven. The plexiglass skin of the automobile just wouldn't withstand the rigors of the road.  (via news.yahoo.com)
