The first trailer for 'Wild' is online, the new film from 'Dallas Buyers Club' director Jean-Marc Vallée, starring Reese Witherspoon in a role that will surely gain her some attention come Oscar season, as the actress stars as a reckless, recently-separated woman who goes on a quest to walk over 1,000 miles to redeem herself and her spirit.

We've been curious what we might see from Vallée next, following 'Dallas Buyers Club,' which earned Matthew McConaughey an Oscar for Best Actor earlier this year -- can he work the same magic on Reese Witherspoon? It certainly seems like he might with the first trailer for 'Wild,' which continues Witherspoon's trend of selecting challenging, dramatic roles.

The official synopsis:

With the dissolution of her marriage and the death of her mother, Cheryl Strayed has lost all hope. After years of reckless, destructive behavior, she makes a rash decision. With absolutely no experience, driven only by sheer determination, Cheryl hikes more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone. WILD powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddens, strengthens, and ultimately heals her.

We're excited to see Witherspoon play a messier, more complex character than those she's chosen in the past. We saw a little of that with her small supporting role in last year's 'Mud,' but here she gets the full spotlight. 'Wild' also boasts a solid supporting cast: Michiel Huisman, Thomas Sadoski, Gaby Hoffmann, W. Earl Brown, and Laura Dern.

The film hits theaters on December 5 - just in time for Oscar season, of course.
