Metallica, the Who Rock Outside Lands Festival: Photo Gallery

This past weekend, San Francisco’s annual genre-blending Outside Lands Festival featured a strong classic rock presence, as Metallica and the Who served as headliners on consecutive nights. We’ve got dozens of great photos from each band’s set above.

This weekend was the second recent homecoming stop on James Hetfield and company’s current North American tour. Earlier in the week they performed the National Anthem before a San Francisco Giants ballgame for their 5th annual Metallica night at AT&T Park. Their Saturday night Outlands set at Golden Gate Park featured the usual blend of classics and songs from their current Hardwired… to Self-Destruct album.

The Who closed out Sunday night’s show with a 22-song set blending equal doses of their three most famous albums: Tommy, Who’s Next and Quadrophenia. Next up, Pete Townshend will take his Classic Quadrophenia show on the road for five dates in September, with help from Billy Idol and Alfie Boe.

This week – specifically, Wednesday Aug. 16 in Edmonton – Metallica will wrap up their summer 2017 North American WorldWired tour. We’ve been following each and every concert; you can look back at all the big moments and song debuts on our Set List Tracker page.

The band recently revealed that a deluxe reissue of their landmark 1986 album Master of Puppets is currently being assembled, and might even possibly be ready for the holiday season. “We’ll try to see if we can get it out at the end of this year,” said drummer Lars Ulrich. “It’s coming soon. We’re working on it. … It’s an immense project.”
