It's hot across west central Texas. The forecast for this week (6/13-6/19) is calling for 7 consecutive days of high temperatures above 100 degrees. And as you might expect there is no rain anywhere in that forecast.

I had wondered aloud on the air about the record for most consecutive days above 100 degrees here in Abilene. It turns out we've got a long way to go to beat that record, but with this weather pattern, it could happen.

According to a recent article in the Abilene Reporter-News: 'Abilene reached 100 degrees or more for 30 consecutive days from Aug. 3 to Sept. 1, 1943'

That is downright brutal. And as it stands right now there is no relief in sight. The first day of Summer is just over one week away, and we are already seeing scorching temperatures lined up as far ahead as forecasters want to predict. Along with the heat and dry conditions, we've got non stop gusty winds, which exacerbate the danger of wildfires.

It should go without saying, but this weather takes an especially heavy toll on area elderly residents. If you've got an elderly neighbor or relative living nearby, it's prudent to check on them often to make sure they've got adequate cooling and hydration.

The same goes for your pets. They are subject to heat stroke just like we are. And if you work outdoors, make sure to take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water.

This summer could be one for the record books. For more information on our relentless hot weather pattern, check the article from the Abilene Reporter News at the link straight ahead. (via reporternews.com)
