I'm all about things that make life easy. Life hacks. Tricks you can use to get the job done. I found one that Texans need to act on now. Consider popping a dryer sheet into your mailbox. Yes, you read that right, a dryer sheet, like the kind you toss in the dryer with your laundry. At first, this might sound a bit unusual, but it’s a neat little hack that can make a big difference.

According to an article from The Old House, the main reason to slide a dryer sheet into your mailbox is to keep away pesky insects. In the warmer months, Texas becomes a hotbed for small critters like wasps and spiders, who might find a mailbox's dark, interior an ideal spot to settle.

I think we can all agree nobody wants to reach in for their mail only to pull out a handful of unexpected guests. Dryer sheets contain certain chemicals that are believed to repel insects, making your mailbox less attractive to them.

Besides keeping insects at bay, a dryer sheet can help knock out any musty odors that might build up over time. Mailboxes can get surprisingly smelly, especially if they are exposed to the elements. A dryer sheet keeps things fresh every time you retrieve your mail.

It’s an easy trick: just tuck a fresh dryer sheet at the back or side of your mailbox. Depending on the weather and how potent you find the smell, you might want to change it every few weeks.

So, why not give it a try? Placing a dryer sheet in your mailbox could save you from a nasty sting.  After all, in Texas, where the bugs are big and the heat is bigger, every little bit helps when it comes to staying comfortable and safe.
