The Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis put on quite a show over the past month due to a substantial solar storm (January of 2012).  While this storm disrupted some communications here on earth, it lit up the Auroras in areas of the world where they can be seen.

It's a sight I've always wanted to view up close and personal.  We don't get to see the phenomenon in our part of the country, so we have to be grateful to those who take photos and video of one of the most beautiful and mysterious sights on the planet.  The first video is a compilation of time lapse views taken from space (by the International Space Station).  The second video is a view of the lights from the surface.  Amazing to watch:
