See enough Woody Allen movies and you realize he only has like eight different stories and themes and he just mixes and matches them. Based on the trailer for his latest movie, Café Society, it appears that his latest effort (his tenth movie in the last ten years and 20th movie in 20 years) combines the standard issue Allen-esque nebbish (played this time by Jesse Eisenberg) who falls for a woman way out of his league (Kristen Stewart) with his deep nostalgia for the past (in this case Hollywood of the 1930s) in a story that takes a comedic look at the futility of life. It ain’t the most original premise for Woody, but when you make 20 movies in 20 years, how many original premises can there be?

A young man arrives in Hollywood during the 1930s hoping to work in the film industry. There, he falls in love, and finds himself swept up in the vibrant café society that defined the spirit of the age.

Typically one Woody Allen movie is tough to distinguish from the next. But there’s one thing that makes Café Society instantly stand out, and that’s the gorgeous cinematography by Vittorio Storaro, the man who shot Apocalypse Now and Reds and The Last Emperor and Last Tango in Paris. Even in a little YouTube window on a laptop screen, it’s obvious that this movie is gorgeous. Whether it exceeds any other recent Woody Allen movie in any other way remains to be seen. But, yeah, the visuals look absolutely spectacular.

Café Society will open this year’s Cannes Film Festival next month; it debuts in theaters on August 12.
