‘Café Society’ Trailer: Woody Goes to Hollywood
See enough Woody Allen movies and you realize he only has like eight different stories and themes and he just mixes and matches them. Based on the trailer for his latest movie, Café Society, it appears that his latest effort (his tenth movie in the last ten years and 20th movie in 20 years) combines the standard issue Allen-esque nebbish (played this time by Jesse Eisenberg) who falls for a woman way out of his league (Kristen Stewart) with his deep nostalgia for the past (in this case Hollywood of the 1930s) in a story that takes a comic look at the futility of life. It ain’t the most original premise for Woody, but when make 20 movies in 20 years, how many original premises can there be?

Magicians: they’re no longer just people who remind of you of the good choices you made in life when seen at children’s birthday parties. Magicians are now “cool” and “sexy” and “played by Lizzy Caplan.” She’s taking the place of Isla Fisher, who was presumably busy keeping a brave face as she watched her husband of six years crawl into an elephant’s vagina, as one of two new key acquisitions for the fledgling franchise. As the newly released trailer embedded above indicates, she’s one of three newcomers, along with Chinese singer Jay Chou and actual boy wizard Daniel Radcliffe, showing a little range by portraying a character who cannot do magic, but does somehow have access to every single computer in the world, which is slightly more implausible.

In addition to confirming that runtime, Warner Bros. has released a few new character posters, giving Alfred, Lex Luthor and Lois Lane their very own one-sheets.

Amazon is going all in on the Woody Allen business. The streaming-video giant has made some decisive moves in their quest to supplant Netflix as the dominant player in this increasingly crowded marketplace, one of which was landing Woody Allen for an original TV series back in January 2015. Last time he checked in about it, Allen wasn’t doing so hot with the TV format — he told Deadline that he “regretted every second since I said okay” to helming the six-episode series for Amazon — but he evidently enjoyed working with the studio, because Amazon has now announced that they will release Allen’s untitled next film.

Noted Comic-Con hater, actor and apparently now writer, Jesse Eisenberg, appeared on NBC’s Today to promote his upcoming book of short stories “Bream Gives Me Hiccups” and talk eventually turned to Batman vs. Superman. It was at this point that Eisenberg, who plays Lex Luthor in the upcoming superhero movie, assured us all that not only is Batman vs. Superman a “phenomenal” movie, but that’s it’s also a “very serious” movie. To which, the entire universe responded with a resounding, no freaking duh.
