A rare find was discovered recently at a yard sale in Liverpool. Tucked inside a book was a hand written letter by Paul McCartney dated in 1960 offering a 'drummer tryout' for the Beatles. The unknown drummer had posted a simple ad in the Liverpool newspaper offering his services. McCartney wrote to the drummer offering an audition, but stating that the musician must be ready to leave immediately to join the band in Hamburg. The Beatles honed their skills playing marathon shows in city's red light district.

The letter reads in part,"Expenses paid 18 pounds per week (approx) for two months."   "If interested ring Jacaranda club."  It's signed, "Yours sincerely, Paul McCartney of the BEATLES."

The find shocked Beatle scholars and experts at Christie's auction house. They will offer the letter on auction and expect it to fetch around $11,000.

The tantalizing part of the story is the unknown identity of the drummer. Did he audition for the band? Did he even answer McCartney's query? Where is he now?
Can you imagine being that particular individual and thinking about what could have been?

There has been no contact with McCartney yet regarding any further detail on the story. Paul is honeymooning with his new wife Nancy Shevell this week on the Caribbean island of Mustique.

The experts don't believe the audition was offered to either Ringo Starr or Pete Best, so it will be interesting to see if more details emerge on a 'lost' fragment of Beatles history. For more on Paul McCartney's honeymoon, just click here at TrueOldiesAbilene.com/paul. (via music.msn.com)
