David Crosby is 70 years old today (August 12th).  I don't know if he ever thought he would reach that milestone.  Crosby is literally an integral part of the fabric of rock and roll, and an testament to its worst excesses.

He hit rock bottom in the early 80s suffering from addictions to both heroin and cocaine, but managed to finally clean up after decades of excessive drug use.  In 1994 he got a liver transplant and has been fairly healthy ever since.

David Crosby is in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame twice - as a member of The Byrds and as a member of Crosby, Stills, and Nash.  He is undeniably gifted as a singer, songwriter and musician.  Crosby wrote or co-wrote such legendary songs as 'Eight Miles High', 'Wooden Ships', 'Almost Cut My Hair', 'Long  Time Gone', and 'Guinevere'.  His vocal harmonies are legendary, forming the 'glue' in the sound of CSN.

But it's his solo work and lead vocal work with Crosby, Stills, and Nash that are underrated a bit in my opinion.  Crosby's deeper album tracks with the band, and as a solo artist are a goldmine.  One of my favorite songs has always been 'Traction In The Rain'.  I love the title and the picture it paints.  And the vocal perfection and lyrics are absolutely incredible.  Check out the video.  Happy Birthday David Crosby!:
