The Dachshund Races Return to Abilene for a Good Cause

Mark your calendars! The wildly entertaining Dachshund Races and Rescued Dogs Reunion is back at Festival Gardens in Abilene on Thursday, June 12, 2025, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most heartwarming, tail-wagging events in Texas.

Why the June Date? Blame the Heat

You might be asking yourself, “Dachshund races in June?” Yep, this fun-filled tradition was moved from July to June because, let’s face it, Texas summers are brutal. The new date keeps the pups (and their people) cool, and safe, and yes, Daddy’s little Dachshund still wants to win that Father’s Day trophy.

All Dogs Are Welcome, And All Are Worth Celebrating

This isn’t just a race for Dachshunds, it’s a celebration for rescued dogs of all breeds. If you’ve got a furry friend, whether they run like lightning or nap like champs, bring them out! There are friendly competitions including:

• Best costume
• Oldest and youngest dog
• Biggest and smallest pup
• Owner-dog lookalike

Every contest earns a trophy, perfect for Father’s Day bragging rights.

A Personal Mission to Help Rescues

As someone who’s rescued more animals than I can count (including three cats currently ruling my house), this event is personal. Last year, just before Valentine’s Day, I gifted my wife a golden retriever named Jane, a sweet rescue who reminded us of our beloved family dog Jumpin’ Jack Flash, who passed more than 15 years ago. Jane has brought joy and comfort into our home.

Free Fun, But Donations Help Save Lives

Admission and registration are free, but donations are needed and deeply appreciated. Proceeds help Rescue the Animals SPCA saves more dogs and cats, many of which are transferred across the country to find loving homes.
