One thing I remember about moving back to Abilene a year ago is the fact that you've got to start looking early if you want a decent place to live. Many of us have gone through it. You spend weeks looking for that perfect house in the city that meets all of your needs.

Then when you find it, the moving process begins. Moving. It's a drag. I don't know too many people, if any, that enjoy it. That's why friends suddenly become "busy" that weekend at the first mention. The excitement of a different home in Abilene may be there, but first things first.

Making a Timeline

There are a lot of details that go into moving and I found the timing to be crucial. Whether it's giving notices to scheduling movers, you've got to start somewhere. For many people, this is the most difficult part of the moving process.

Finding Out Just How Much Stuff You Have

I don't know about you but for me, you get the overall scale of how much stuff you've accumulated once you start packing. Certain pieces of clothing or others items you could swear were lost somewhere suddenly turn up. Things that were maybe in the attic or in storage now come back into memory. You know what they say - out of sight, out of mind.

Realizing You Need to Hire Movers

I get it. Nobody like to move so finding help can be scarce. In my case, I have furniture so heavy it has to be moved professionally and that means big bucks here in Abilene. Moving companies are crazy in what they charge. It's way more of an expense than what I had budgeted. However, at the end of the day, I didn't have to do the heavy lifting. But my bank account still hurts.

Cleaning Both Old and New Places

Be prepared to clean. I know it's another task that most people dread. You want to make sure your new home is fresh and clean from the get-go. At the same time, if you rented, cleaning your old place is just as important. You want to get any deposits back that you can plus save yourself money from any overpriced charges.

Ugh, that's a bunch to take in. Moving is no small task. That's why so many of us need help. It happens to all of us at one time or another. It's almost unavoidable. No matter if you're renting or buying a home, there are pains of moving. How many of these do you agree with?

Of course, sometimes you're not moving within Abilene but out of the state. It happens. Jobs, family, there are plenty of reasons why. But, where are most people moving to? Every state has its hotspots. Look below to find out about your destination.
