One of the biggest leaps in everyday technology is happening right here in Lubbock—and somehow, almost nobody seems to notice.

We’re not talking about something futuristic or experimental. This is real, it’s working, and it’s sitting right in front of people… while they stand in line pretending it doesn’t exist.

There are a few things I like to buy in bulk, so every now and then I grab a membership to Sam's Club when they run a deal. I only go a handful of times a year, but I load up on paper goods and pantry staples and call it good.

The strategy is simple: buy what you’ll actually use, skip the nonsense, and get out.

That last part used to be the problem.

🚶‍♂️ You Can Literally Skip the Line Now

If you’ve ever been there on a Saturday, you know the chaos—packed aisles, overflowing carts, and checkout lines that feel endless.

This past weekend was no different. Every register open, self-checkouts slammed, and people just…waiting.

Meanwhile, I walked right past all of it.

The secret is the “Scan & Go” feature on their app. You scan your items as you shop, hit “Slide to pay,” confirm, and you’re done. You get a digital receipt and head straight for the exit.

No conveyor belt.
No awkward small talk.
No waiting behind someone price-checking bulk snacks.

And here’s the wild part—you just walk out. Sensors overhead, no alarms, no hassle. It feels wrong the first time…like you missed a step. But you didn’t—you’re just ahead of the curve.

It at least seemed like I was the only one who used this express lane to consumer heaven.

🔮 This Is Where Everything Is Headed

And it’s not just there. There’s already a similar self-serve setup at Grace Clinic—grab, scan, and go. No cashier, no waiting.

This is the direction everything is moving: faster, smoother, less friction.

And for whatever reason, a lot of people just haven’t made the jump yet.

That’s fine by me.

Shorter lines for the rest of us.
