From The Jones To Galaxy Stadium: Lubbock Moved On Quickly

Making the jump from Jones AT&T Stadium seemed like it was going to be a big one, but it’s turning out to be surprisingly easy.

We Called It “The Jones” For A Long Time

Let’s take a look back at how long we had our previous stadium names before we get into just how quickly we seem to forget.

From 1947 to 1999, it was simply Jones Stadium.

From 2000 to 2005, it was Jones SBC Stadium.

From 2006 to 2025, it was Jones AT&T Stadium.

And for almost all of that time, the shorthand was just “The Jones.”

That was a lot of years for one nickname to become part of the Lubbock vocabulary.

So when that name was punted in favor of some big naming-rights bucks, the question was whether the new name would go wide right, wide left, or sail straight through the uprights.

I hate to say it, but I’m amazed at how easily Galaxy Stadium already rolls off the tongue.

Galaxy Is Simply A Better Name For A Football Stadium

I’m still not entirely sure what Galaxy stands for or what exactly they’re selling, but bringing the stadium name down to basically one word makes it incredibly easy to say and remember.

We’re only one home game into the season, and the name “Galaxy” already seems to have taken hold. There’s really no denying it.

Where I check out is with some of the hokey additional ways people are trying to work the name into everything.

Calling the team or the fans “The Guardians of the Galaxy?”

No thanks.

Calling it “The Best Stadium in the Galaxy?”

I’ll pass on that one, too.

You don’t have to beat us over the head with it.

Just call it Galaxy Stadium and move on.

As strange as it is after decades of calling the place “The Jones,” the change already feels pretty complete.

I figured people would fight the new name for years.

Instead, it looks like Lubbock may have moved on in about one football game.
