I’ve probably seen a sadder report than this one—but I can’t remember when. Texas is coming up short when it comes to kids, and not in some abstract way—this hits right at their health and well-being.

You’ve heard it your whole life: Texas is a great place to raise kids. Big skies, strong communities, and opportunity everywhere. But according to a new study from WalletHub, there are 43 states doing it better when it comes to children’s healthcare. That’s not just disappointing—it’s alarming.

Now, you can argue methodology all day long, but WalletHub’s rankings are known for being deep and data-driven. They pull from multiple sources, look at real-world outcomes, and stack states side by side. You may not love the questions—but the answers paint a pretty clear picture.

The study, titled Best & Worst States for Children’s Healthcare, shows Texas landing at #44 overall. And when you break it down, it gets even harder to defend. Texas ranks 48th in Kids’ Health & Access to Healthcare, meaning kids here are among the least likely to get the care they need. Oral health isn’t much better at 31st, and even in areas like nutrition, physical activity, and obesity, Texas only manages 20th—hardly a bragging point.

Let’s be real: if kids aren’t healthy, nothing else matters. You can’t learn, grow, or thrive when basic healthcare isn’t there. And yet, this is one of those issues that rarely gets real attention. It’s not flashy. It’s not headline-grabbing. But it’s foundational.

That’s what makes this so frustrating. You don’t hear much about fixing this. You don’t hear leaders stepping up and saying, “Let’s get this right.” Maybe it’s because there’s no glamour in it. Maybe it’s because it doesn’t win easy votes.

But if we’re being honest, taking care of kids shouldn’t be controversial—it should be automatic.

And right now, Texas is failing that test.

WARNING: Ten Texas Hospitals Earn Worst “D” Grade in 2025 Ratings

The following ten hospitals in Texas received dismal "D" ratings for patient safety from the independent Leapfrog Group, a non-profit patient advocacy organization. Included in the rankings are serious, life-threatening "never" events like foreign objects being left in the body after surgery, neglectful events like patient falls and bedsores, and administrative problems like poor nurse communication and bad billing practices.
