An experimental new treatment for leukemia is showing amazing results in initial trials. The treatment, which uses a single injection, is demonstrating complete cures in early patients. Patients in the trial were in advanced stages of leukemia when given the shot, made from white cells which were genetically altered to activate the body's immune system to fight and kill cancer cells.

Two patients were cured completely and show no signs of the disease after a full year. Another patient showed an improvement of 70 percent. To put it quantitatively, the two patients who were cured saw as much as five pounds of cancerous tissue literally 'melt away'.

The treatment was so effective that some doctors are calling it one of the biggest advances against cancer in decades. And keep in mind that this treatment was utilized in patients with the most common form of leukemia - CLL or chronic lymphocytic leukemia. So the benefits to the entire population of leukemia sufferers could be incredible.

Doctors and researchers are already discussing using this same technique to fight other cancers. It might actually be an exponential leap forward in the treatment of many different forms of the disease. The difference in this treatment as opposed to others using the body's own white cells to fight cancer is that the researchers inserted a gene that makes the 'trained' white cells multiply a thousand fold inside the body.

Obviously this treatment is brand new and won't be widely available for some time. However, with initial results such as these, there is hope that it will be on a fast track to FDA approval. See the complete story with much more detail about the technique here at msnbc.com.
