Serena Williams is being treated for a very serious condition; a blood clot in her lungs. These clots, known as pulmonary embolisms are serious business and can be fatal.

In some instances the embolisms are silent and swift killers, so it is fortunate that she is undergoing treatment in a hospital setting, and that the embolism has been found.

This apparently stems from a visit to her doctor to check on her foot. She had surgery on her foot after cutting it on broken glass at Wimbledon last year. She was scheduled to begin training soon.
