Lorde Sings ‘All Apologies’ With Nirvana at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction

The 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony had many highlights, including the induction of one of my favorite bands, Nirvana. And I was pleasantly surprised with how they drummer Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic handled their live performance, since lead singer Kurt Cobain has been dead for 20 years.

I knew that legendary rocker Joan Jett (who Novacelic was outspoken about deserving a spot in the Hall) was going to be performing with the band, but didn't realize that they would have a different lady singing for each of their songs. Following Jett singing 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth sang 'Aneurism', then Annie Clark of the band St. Vincent did a great version of 'Lithium'. But to me, the most intriguing lady to front Nirvana for their induction performance was a young lady who wasn't even born until 2 years after Kurt Cobain died. Lorde was introduced by Novacelic by saying "We're gonna invite someone up here who's intense. She's passionate. So she's perfect for the job. She has her whole future in front of her, too." She humbly took the stage and finished the show singing 'All Apologies', and I thought she was as good as anyone. Check it out here:

The induction speeches included Cobain's mother Wendy O'Connor speaking briefly, humanizing her son by saying "I’m already crying because he’d be so proud — he’d say he wasn’t — but he would be. I just miss him so much. He was such an angel."

Then Cobain's widow, the hot mess that is Courtney Love, spoke to a chorus of more boo's than cheers. She stopped in the middle of the speech to hug the band and Wendy Cobain.
