Pepsico is testing new 'plastic' bottles for its soft drinks made entirely of plants. The new bottles include switch grass, pine bark, and corn husks among other organics.

They say the bottles are just as good at protecting the product as the current plastic bottles and leave no taste at all.

Coca Cola currently uses some bottles made up of about 30 percent plant material, but they don't have plans to convert to a total organic container.

Even at the 30 percent level, Coke touts a substantial positive environmental impact. They say their bioplastic bottles have eliminated about 30,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide, saving approximately 60,000 barrels of oil.

If you do the math, the new Pepsi bottles would be much better at reducing petroleum pollution in plastics. Pepsico is going to test a few hundred thousand of the new bottles, and if all goes well, might use the material for all of their containers. Pretty cool. The only downside is that the new bottles are not recyclable like aluminum cans or the current petroleum based plastics.
