There are not many of the godfathers of blues still among the living. And now the last known surviving, original Delta bluesman David 'Honeyboy' Edwards is gone at the age of 96. 'Honeyboy' got his nickname from his sister, who alerted his mother when he stumbled as a toddler to 'look at honey boy'. He carried the name through life and his career. And 'Honeyboy' played with all the greats: Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Charlie Patton, and Muddy Waters.

He toured throughout his life, playing about 70 shows a year into his 90s. 'Honeyboy' Edwards wrote blues standards such as 'Long Tall Woman Blues', 'Gamblin' Man', and 'Just Like Jesse James'. He would freely talk with audience members after his shows, pose for pictures, and sign autographs.

People who knew him say he had a photographic memory about the details of his long life. Luckily, those details were captured for posterity in a book published in 1997 titled, 'The World Don't Owe Me Nothin': The Life And Times Of Delta Bluesman Honeyboy Edwards'. He played internationally to great acclaim and finally got a lot of his music recorded properly by APO records in the year 2000. You can get the cd or the vinyl record via acousticsounds.com .

Honeyboy Edwards won a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.  Check out a video of Honeyboy performing one of his signature songs 'Gamblin' Man.  Long live the blues:       (via music.msn.com)
